F-4 D Phantom II attached to the 309th Fighter Squadron "Wild Ducks" Homestead AFB, FL. Tail # 66463 the "MIG Killer" Notice the five red stars on the intake. This aircraft is on static display at the USAF Academy near the Base Chapel.
F-4 during Hertage Flight training at DM in 2007.
Back in April I went to Houston for a conference and decided to rent a car and spend some time down at Ellington Field to see if I could catch NASA's WB-57F. The first thing I saw when I got there was this F-4D on the ramp, hooked up to a start cart. Turns out it was Collings' F-4, the one that used to be flown in the Steve Ritchie markings, making its first flight in over three years. Ridiculous luck. (I caught the WB-57 the next day thanks to a heads-up call from Matt).

Congrats James, awesome catch.
So Ned caught one on a Monday and you caught one on a Tuesday. Wonder if this counts as a "Monday" since yesterday was a holiday. I've got to catch one before they're all gone.
James,
This last one of yours is missing the hump! Nice!
I'll take any Phantom any day, humped or not... lol!

Excellent Matt. Glad you guys caught it. She put on a great show with 5 circuits before touchdown, looked great from where I was standing sans camera.

Told you something nice would be there shortly!
Hello guys,
Haven't had a great deal to post recently, but I thought you guys might be interested in some F-4 shots from Hyakuri. I've visited five times over the last 18 months or so, and never quite had the sort of day I would have liked. Finally at the fifth time of asking, the stars aligned!
First up some F-4EJs from 302 Hikotai:

Outstanding set of shots, it looks like the Emperor willed a good day for you.
Hyakuri and Wittmund are #1 and #2 on my dream-list, but sadly neither will still be flying F-4s by the time I'm in a position to go to either.
Paul,
Those are some outstanding images. The weather looked cold, but very clear! Some great composition on those as well. I really like the 1st & 3rd shots in the F-4EJ series.

Great capture on the F-4 - love that color scheme!
Side note, when I was a teenager the Thunderbirds flew the F-4E. They did a show with those bad boys at Falcon Field. My parent's home is not far from Falcon. We sat on the roof and watched them practice the day before the show. I can still remember the ROAR as the F-4's would come over the house - off the charts!
Due to the %$*&@$ landing long situation even Contractor's Way isn't a sure bet. This was the best I got from TWO passes.

(Might clone out the C-130 tails though. Just a thought)
Thanks Jay! Good point about the C-130 tails, I didn't even notice them! This would be a good time to work on my cloning technique. I am always looking for constructive criticism.
Looks like maybe you have enough room to just pull the crop in on that side. Might be left with just a little "tail nub" to clean up...
I was thinking the same thing, just like this.

Perfecto!
I like the crop, but it also kills the Danang-in-1970 vibe of the original.
Actually, looks like Ubon had FT-coded Spectres and a ton of F-4Es in the 69-70 timeframe, so aside from the Tyndall tailcode and squadron markings, it might have been a semi-convincing "vintage" shot.

Jay inspired me to go for a B&W conversion on the F-4. Here is my effort.

James: Spectacular catch for TIA. I've got to get over there this week.
So, is it safe to assume there are no changes in the Airport Authority posture since the arrival of the DM birds?
D'oh!
Solid shot James. I'm typically not the jealous type, but I REALLY want to get a shot like this - great angle, great light, gear sucked up - PERFECT!
And John, if the security at Willie is any indication, you shouldn't have too many problems. There are AF SecFor guys afoot, but they pretty much just keep an eye on the aircraft.
I got the standard pass-and-wave today as always.

Barry, Nice to see some Phantoms still flying. The aviation world was a lot more interesting when F-4s were a common sight. Here's an F-4C at Luke in 1979.
They sure have a distinctive 60's ear-splitting noise when they spool up for take-off, Scott - and the Tornadoes that are here in Tucson as snowbirds aren't far behind.

Great shots by all.
Love the shots from the Phantom final flight, especially Joe's end of watch shot. Definitely could see that printed up in a nice big metal print and hung on a wall. Well done by all.

Another one from the Phantom Phinale. Love the non-standard camo on this bird.

Easily one of my favorite shots from the Phantom Farewell last month.
Excellent tribute shot Joe. One can almost see the saddened smile on the face of this Phantom driver. The Last Lap and Last Goodbye are both so appropriate. It's sad to know that we'll not see them fly again. Especially us "Old Guys" who saw them come to the inventory and perform so powerfully over the years in the defense of our Nation. Thanks for posting.
Beautiful set Jay. Wonderful shots all. I would have loved to have been there to see it in person. Thanks for the posts.

Thanks Vance.
What left the greatest impression on me at the F-4 retirement event is that Det 1 at Holloman had just received their first QF-16 two days prior. The F-16 is a vastly superior aircraft for the aerial targets mission - it's far more maneuverable than the F-4 and the control responses are immediate. It is very clearly an upgrade for them. Yet despite this, there was virtually no mention of this during the ceremony, and certainly no celebration of getting some new and improved iron on their ramp. It really drove home just how iconic and beloved the Phantom is.

Props to you Joe for thinking of the human element. I wish I'd have cheated toward that side of the ramp a bit more...
Thanks Jay. Hauled ass from the west side to the east to catch this. Was hoping to get all four pilots during their 'dismounts,' but the set-up that day precluded it. Getting people shots was a bit of a pain in the ass since the guy from Airman Magazine was in everyone's faces with his wide-angle lens, meaning he was in everyone else's shots, but he was there doing his job and the people shots he got were actually pretty good: https://www.flickr.com/photos/airmanmagazine/albums/72157680603016495

Iconic work Joseph. You crushed the exposure and the wide/tight crop is spot on. The subtle highlight gently falling on the intake provides just the right balance to the contrasting silhouette of the canopy. Of course, this is just my humble opinion.
Amazing that this bird was stable enough to recover after receiving this level of damage. It looks like a couple of the Remote Control antennas were lost/damaged as well making recover even more challenging (leading edge and dorsal edge of the the Vertical Tail). Two really nice shots Joe. Well Done!

Sleeping Beauty
This F-4E was salvaged from the boneyard for preservation at the Dutch Military museum at the old Soesterberg Airbase. It is painted to represent a phantom of the 32nd TFS, while it was stationed here. This particular example scored a MiG kill, which is still present, although this airframe never operated from Soesterberg. After arrival it remained in storage for many years, only being showed to the public officially last weekend for special aviation days at the museum.

Very nice Bjorn, always good to see a classic F-4E, it'll be a great addition to the Dutch Military museum.
it is a great addition, but it will be locked up again for some time now. They have about all aircraft which operated the 32nd, but the F-100 is in restoration, the 102 and 86 are outside all the time.
