I typically don't mess around with my photos, but I was screwing around with the cross-process function in Picnik last year on this shot of a Ryan International 757 arriving at Willie on a rainy day and I actually liked the results:
You should screw around more. ;D

Ok, cropped it up a bit. It does look better. Thanks!

I shot two of them (the ground shots) with my Nikor 70-300 mm and the two airborne 757s (United) with my new Sigma 150-500mm.

I apologize for the quality on this one...the clouds just wouldn't get out of the way. Also, City of Phoenix gave me some trouble for being out with my camera when Joe Biden was arriving...I told them that I'm still going to take the photos (as politely as I could)...and wouldn't you know it, my little camera didn't make the plane crash after all!

Amazing set of shots, Ramp Rat!
Ben, these engine shots are awesome. How close were you and how noisy was it? I think I'd be worried about my camera and tripod and possibly me becoming FOD in those big fans.
Ben,
I'm going to take a leap and guess that the engines on the 757 were just free-wheeling in a breeze and that there wasn't actually a fire lit when you took those shots?
Long exposure + slight breeze + tripod = illusion of serious/fatal FOD potential?
- Dave
Didn't think about the fans being windblown. It is a nice effect and the photos are surperb.
Thank you for the compliments, everyone!
Dave, you are correct, there was just enough of a breeze to slowly turn the fan. These exposures were all 8 seconds each. This particular 757 had arrived about an hour earlier prior to when I was out there shooting.
i was sitting on the ground with my camera on the gorilla pod and used my remote release to trigger the shutter. For the higher vantage point, I set my camera up on a bag tug that I parked in front of the engine. Ah, the benefits of being an airline employee! Good fun!

Funny story about catching this particular plane that was arriving from Oakland on Sunday. My wife had ordered a package, and it was shipping from Oakland. FedEx delivered it to our house mid-day on Monday. So I'm thinking the chances are pretty good that our package was actually on this flight. Maybe just wishful thinking on my part, maybe not.

Went near that parking lot on the West side of runway 08/26 to catch British Airways landing. I had also notice that the Honeywell International 757 Test bed wasn't there so I looked it up and it was coming in about the same time as British. Turns out the Honeywell aircraft was landing right behind British, but due to British still being on the runway the 757 had to abort the landing and go back around.

I love the soft light in this image Chris - well done. I'm surprised there isn't a vapor trail. It makes me wonder if too much "soup" cancels the vapor trails?

Thank you Jeff.. I've tweaked that pic on and off for over a year and finally felt it was worthy of posting. It was a very chilly day and there was no vapor that I can remember at all that day, at least none that I can remember.

This was a complete overhaul including full paint. Oh, and they installed the internal cargo handling equipment as well. AeroTurbine is quite the facility.
And yes, this was a pretty rugged afternoon of shooting. Had to have been nearly 120 degrees on the ramp that afternoon.

Nice balance between the interior and exterior...even with those open windows in the cockpit, bet it was still like an oven in there.
Was that winglet image taken from a cherry picker? Betting a ladder tall enough for that shot would have been a little too unstable.

Excellent set of shots. The one with the AeroTurbine logo in the frame is awesome, but the winglet close up is just such a cool perspective. That thing is gargantuan.

Thanks...
If you look at GYR on Google Maps, you'll see that AeroTurbine actually has quite a bit of real estate north of their northernmost hangar. We had intended to roll it as far out there as possible and point it more toward the southwest, but airport operations rolled up and said we had to back up into the alley because the north edge of AeroTurbine's ramp was being used as an active taxiway due to airport construction. That didn't leave me enough room to back up far enough to get the whole plane in one shot without a LOT of clutter behind it.
Well, you certainly used that clutter to your advantage. The aircraft itself is frame-filling enough that nothing behind it really competes for attention, and the only thing that does is the AeroTurbine logo, which I'm imagining they didn't have much of a problem with.
My second gig for Precision Conversions.
This 757 belongs to SF Airlines which is currently a freight hauler on mainland China looking to expand to compete with FedEx and UPS in Asia.
