The engine is a Lycoming TRP-540, which is a six-cylinder horizontally opposed piston engine that is in a lot of general aviation aircraft, including the Cessna 182.

The Firebird is an optionally piloted vehicle built by Northrop's Scaled Composites in 12 months. There was a pilot on board for today's flight.

A lot of these are the same aircraft Paul and I saw up north during last Friday's Wallow Fire "sitzkreig." Tankers 48 and 55 were at Winslow, and SEAT 873 was at Show Low.

Those Skycranes are strange looking beasts. I once watched one lifting a large air conditioning unit to the top of a building. The pilot was flying it from the secondary pilot's position at the rear of the cockpit section.

Very nice shots Ned!! My oldest son and I were shooting astro south of Ajo near the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument a few months back when we heard what sounded like a (slow but loud) lawn mower flying over. It was pitch black out (new Moon) and so was the Predator! No lights at all. We smiled and waved (in the direction of the sound) - the operator likely got a kick out of that. Heading back north I asked a BP agent about it. He did not say much, but did confirm they fly along the border quite often and typically blacked out.

I don't know if anyone tracks things like this, but I am on here nearly every day looking for new posts. I know that with all that's going on these days that it's hard to get out much.
