ACMI Pods?
Dunno why there would be two though...
Supporting ANG/AFRC Test Center work?
They don't look like standard ACMI pods.
Good Point...
Given that it's Test/Eval work though, they're probably jacked into some network of some kind, eh?
Maryland Air National Guard at Test Eval? I looked through all my reference material and across the web, but couldn't find anything that looked like these. Because there is two, I'm guessing weapons. Because they're sitting on the Sidewinder rails, I was wondering if they might be a next step in the Sidewinder evolution. The 9X barely had fins - maybe no fins is the next step in the evolution. They have a shape similar to a skinny SLAMMER but without fins.
Perhaps they are practice missiles, live head and dummy body.
They look longer/skinnier than the AIM family and no apparent seeker head. Even the old ACMI pods without the antenna had the front antenna-ish nose and were fatter. Just darn curious.....
Spent some time digging around, looks like they *may* be what's called an IGI (Inertial GPS Integration) pod. I've seen versions of it with 4 antenna like the ACMI pods and a single reference without them. If I find anything else I'll let you know so we know what the heck they are.

Killer treatment Jay.
That is a very cool shot Jay. Looks like the Hog is snorting smoke.
Also looks like there is one of the bullets captured in the photo, very slim streak at the far left, about a foot above the wingtip.
Yup, that's a bullet. I'd say you can make them out in 1/3 to 1/2 of the gun run shots I took. There's one that I was with better image quality - you can see five bullets in the photo. Also have a few bomb-release shots of A-10s where you can just barely make out the BDU-33 being dropped.
Great Shot Jay. A couple of questions: 1. Where were you when you snapped this? 2. How close were you really? Last one is tonge in cheek...Are you crazy...those 30 mike mikes can ricochet over a mile. Wow, what a wonder...no beautiful shot...I wish I was standing next to you even if I didn't have a camera. When that chainsaw lights up it is the scariest sound, and potentially the last sound you'll ever hear. This photo should be on the cover of Air Combat Magazine. Well done!
1. Range tower at complex II at the BMGR. 2. Close. 3. We were perpendicular to the path of the projectiles, so ricochets were not a concern. Impact zones were 200-300 yards away from us.
We did see several rockets ricochet (most likely the fuses), but again, their direction of flight was perpendicular to ours.
And yes, the gun sounds scary as hell - not so much the burp of the gun itself, but the mini-sonic booms (more like a deep, staccato KRACK!) of the rounds passing you. The gun sound came a second later. Spooky.
Thanks Joe. Awesome opportunity. You all captured it well.
More to come... ;D
Can't wait! ;D

Yep my 4 years on the A-10 Demo Team are done. I am a little bummed but now I have more time with family and friends here in Tucson which I love. Now I need to start meeting up with everyone out here and learn the hot spots.

Thanks James. The light definitely gets more challenging as the day goes on but light and access in the morning definitely makes up for it.
WOW - A Hot Rod Hawg. Nice group Vance!
Thanks Jeff. I spoke to the Chief Master Sargeant who was there during the time of the shoot down. I guess the MI-8 was going into a hover just as this A-10 was rolling in on another target. Extremely bad timing for the Mi-8. One short burst from the GAU and the MI-8 was history.
Really nice set Vance. I remember a news story of an A-10 shooting down a chopper. Don't know if it is the same one, but that is really cool to see.

I see. So they weren't firing those, right?
Correct, they can use them to lock on targets but have no motors (note the lack of steering fins) and no warheads. Same idea as the captive air-to-air missiles.
146 seems to be carrying two IR Mavs. Weird.

No way you were that sharp at that focal length on something traveling that fast, that close to us, while panning diagonally. What do you eat for breakfast?
Unfortunately, that's an extreme crop (approx 80%) of the frame after the one above that shows more of the airframe.
The web is the only place this image will ever live as it has far too few pixels to ever be printed beyond 4x6. :'(

That pod outboard under the left wing on both looks like a LAU-10 for the 5" Zunis. Wonder what that's all about.

No luck on getting any blacksnakes :(
But I did manage to get some keepers from the home based birds.
My guess is that the Blacksnakes are mostly flying at night. Ned got confirmation that those pods that looked like LAU-10 rocket pods were actually SUU-25 flare dispensers, so I'm sure night work is a big part of what they're doing out here. Solid catch on the LGB under 198 though. That's a pretty solid warload he's bringing back with him.
Thanks Joe, yeah I was wondering what was up with that, they usually come back empty.

Looks great in B&W. What a beast!
Thanks, Scott. I never add noise to shots, but there was some banding that resulted from the vignetting I added (actually a few passes with the burn tool), and I had read a while back that adding a bit of noise was a good way to get rid of it. I tried it out and voila - the banding just disappeared. Plus, it gave the image a more textured look that I thought was pretty cool.

Wow!
+1 on the Wow! Super treatment and selection of texture Joe. It really gives this image new life and interest. If I had not seen the original version, I would have thought this was an entirely different capture. While the original was very good; this version changes the dynamic and feel. Very well done sir.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON
Yes! Because the West wasn't won on salad.. Needed some Hawg.... Awesome treatment Joe. Hope to see more.
Dittos on the coolness factor. Not to diminish this excellent work but I think "the look" would be even more integrated with an older aircraft. Nonetheless, very nice!
WOW Joe. I think you out did yourself on this one. I'd love a copy for my office.

Of course I didn't have a camera with me ???, as I was rolling down Hwy 90 towards Sierra Vista this afternoon. I saw two A-10's fly over Fort Huachuca from the west, turn to the se and come back to land at the Fort. A few minutes later, another pr came in.
Is it unusual to have A-10's come into Fort Huachuca?

Cool photo Ned, the nose art on this A-10 is very creative, it's good to know that they got a temporary reprieve from the budget ax.
Harvey, aside from the 23rd Wing squadrons all having "Flying Tigers" mouths on their A-10s, I think this is largely relegated to the Guard and Reserve. Would love to see Dragon and Bulldog faces on D-M's A-10s.
A little on the artsy side, but I took what the clouds gave me...
