Great shots guys!
Matt - I'm glad we went to the other side of the field for that departure, even if my ladder was an inch too short.
how long was it after I left that he departed?
About 20 minutes. He was wheels-up at 4:37.

I'll jump in here and post a shot of our local Mustang from the Vegas area. Bill Allmon owns and flies this wonderfully restored NACA P-51 Mustang. Some one at the show told me he owns and operates many Taco Bell restaurants here in the Vegas Valley. He must sell a hella lot of Tacos to own a Mustang!!

Very cool - a NACA P-51.
Left wing, first image; I'm assuming those are airfoil test sections? Did you get any info on the history of the plane & its testing at NACA/NASA?
Dave
Sorry Dave..but by the time I got around to this plane it was almost time for the show to break up. The pilot/owner apologized but he was not in a talkative mood having answered question from "idiots" all day. I understood.
Yes..those white add-ons were the section where test instruments measured airspeed and such. In a dive the plane would stay sub-sonic but air over those sections would go super sonic. That is what I was told. The A/C was also fitted with an extra six inches to make the tail taller and more stable.
This A/C was rescued from atop a pole. More pics here..

Awesome. I am so glad he didn't follow the well-worn path of those who paint their P-51s up as ace-mounts, especially given the unique history of this airframe.

Is the Red Nose and Tail (Rudder) depicting a Tuskegee Airman mount?
No. Their planes had all red tails.
http://fineartamerica.com/featured/1-tuskegee-airmen-p-51-mustang-stu-shepherd.html
This page seems to indicate that the red nose is indicative of the 4th FG and the red rudder indicates the 334th FS of that group. One of the illustrations seems to be of the aircraft that this one represents.

This one has exactly the same paint scheme as the one in the illustration though, even to the letters QP and O and the swastikas on the canopy rail, so they must both represent the same plane. The only thing missing on this one is the XII.

Thanks Chris and Jay. There is a Tuskegee Mustang at the San Diego Air and Space Museum. I believe that that Mustang actually flew with the Tuskegee Airman. I thought the color scheme looked very similar.
The plane at the SDASM is painted in the colors of the Tuskegee Airmen, but didn't fly with them, according to the museum's web site. It wasn't completed until March, 1945 and reached Europe just as the war there ended.

I'm not sure that is the same
Bum Steer. It's code is DF-X while the code on the one at Davis Monthan is WZ-Y.
I don't know then. I can't find any information on another Bum Steer except one in Europe that is XY-I.
You might want to send a message to the people at Mustangs Mustangs. They're pretty good at identifying unknowns.
The squadron markings are ultimately (at least in the US) meaningless...The N-number is what really matters.
You can have identical paint jobs on two different aircraft but they must have different registrations.

Man Jay, your grandfather sure new how to use his old Kodak Brownie 127 - great prop blur ;)
Vignetting still looks pretty heavy at this resolution (carrying over our conversation from Facebook), but the cracks and scratches look even better here. If you look at a lot of the photos in museums, they're typically pretty flat in terms of contrast, and with a bit of an ambered/sepia look.
Consider This:
The average life of an airframe in WWII was 100 Hours
Given this statistic, wouldn't the aircraft in 1944 look shiny and new?
I don't know about that. If you've ever poked your eyes into Mustang magazine and scanned the photos of Mustangs in the field, they look pretty wheather beaten and tarnished although I'm sure there were several new ones in every squadron replacing lost and war weary mounts. FYI, Mustang magazine might be an excellent reference for your aging experiments/practice.
One more time machine photo. Luke AFB circa 2009.
GREAT SCOTT! ;) love that photo, um Scott lol
Thanks Chris! The original color version was marginal for a couple of reasons but it lent itself to this sort of treatment.

According to mustangsmustangs.com, that was just added last year.
2011: Mar 7 - repainted and flown as "Galveston Gal". Work performed: full IRAN inspection, replacement of lower RH longeron, extended vertical stabilizer, main gear re-bushing, replacement of wing fuel cells and a very nice paint job. First flight by Tommy Gregory.

Thanks Chris. Was wondering about that extended vert. stab.
A lot of the Mustangs flying these days have them, but I think most of those were Cavalier conversions.
I also noticed that many of the P-51's with the taller vertical stabilizer are TF-51 conversions, which as Chris pointed out are usually Cavalier Mustangs. By the way she is part of the Lone Star Flight Museum that is currently in Galveston, Texas. Supposedly they are going to move to Ellington Field, Houston to get away from the hurricanes.

Considering I was in the "inside" seat, I'm really happy with what I was able to get. Scott Slocum was increadibly accommodating throughout the entire hop.
We shot from Scott's A36 Bonanza. One of the FiFi crew (I think) was our pilot and Jason Somes flew MoW.
Thanks Jay. The Beech is a great photo ship from what I've heard although I have never shot from one. One thing I can say for sure is that whatever the platform, it's harder than one would assume. Job well done, especially considering the non-optimum shooting position.

Very fine work Jay. The early Mustangs have always been my favorites. Interesting that it has the dorsal fin. Somehow I thought that feature was only on the bubble canopy versions and was even lacking on some of those.

Yeah, lots of "funkiness" with "Virgin" but given that she's an authentic recovered airframe, I guess we just chalk it up to the fog of manufacturing and field mods...
