...uffff....super!!!
Thanks Jeff, Kaspar, and Chris,
When I was at Luke for the training exercise that brought in the F-22 on January 28, more than one person claimed that an F-35 had visited Luke last year for noise evaluation. Did anyone hear about it at the time?
All three photos are terrific, second one is my favorite.
Completely by chance, I happened to catch the first flight of AF-06 at Fort Worth on Friday. This is the first production aircaft to fly, and carries the markings of the 58 FS, 33 FW, complete with EG tailcodes.

I usually make my own comments, however Scott, I'm going to "ditto" Jeff's comment. Outstanding!
Thank you Harvey!
Scott, you operate at a level with which I am not familiar...
Well Done!
Thank you Jay. I could say the same of you!
Having called within the 15 minute allotted time they sent up not one, not two, but three F-35s. Not available in stores.
Two VMA-211 AV-8Bs to balance things out and to remind any doubters who is still the only fully operational V/STOL combat aircraft. VMA-211 is next in line for the F-35B.
Scott, you continue to impress and amaze!
Scott, I'm so speechless when I see those photos. :o Fantastic work!!
Words .. Fail .. Superior Work!
Thanks guys. I really didn't expect such a positive response. (15 minutes later.....Scott who?)
Happy Birthday Marines and a heartfelt thank you to all who've answered the call to serve.

Scott - I'm not sure I'll ever understand how the F-35B stays in the air with all those "speed brakes" deployed. I keep thinking a clown will pop out of the top like a jack-in-the-box. Clearly some serious technology at work.

Yikes... I'll still take photos of it though...

Obviously a little late to the party but I just became a member so bear with me :P I attended the arrival ceremony of the first F-35 to Luke. I was right up there in with the press! I was a pretty cool experience.

Typically these guys get back just after sunset. But this particular late afternoon/early evening they arrived right at sunset. In fact, on the ground, the sun had already set.

Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II - VMFAT-501
Great F-35 shots Scott. Was this from a C-130? What a great opportunity to be able to get that vantage point.
Thanks Harvey! Yup, KC-130J.
SO much to love here. The 'softbox' lighting, the clouds in the background, the cleanliness of the background, and (my favorite) how the vortices coming off the starboard wingtip follows the shape of the canopy . . .

Besides my complete agreement with the Harvey's and Joe's comments, this second photograph has a very interesting perspective for me. Almost as if the 35 was to close to the 130 ramp and you had to go with wide glass to get the entire airframe in the image. The nose/cockpit section has that ever-so-slightly enlarged distortion I associate with wide angle lenses. While I'm not doing a good job of expressing myself on my viewpoint, rest assured I think it is a terrific look and gives the F-35 a very complimentary emphasis of its unique lines and form. I also love how there is no definitive horizon line. Both the blue sky and ocean melt into each other creating a wonderfully soft/clean background (as Joe noted). Excellent work Scott.
Thanks Harvey, Joe, and Jeff! Nature has a way of creating some nice light from time to time! Long story but I was lucky to get anything on this trip. The F-35s were a complete suprise.

Chiming in here with some accolades too. I was (pleasantly) surprised to see the double wingtip vortices, most notably off the port wingtip, but also visible off the starboard tip too. Very cool image.
Thanks Dave! Those vortices seem to show up more readily than I would have imagined. With the flaperons down you get the two spiraling streams which is pretty cool. It was very humid out there which helped plus being up at 10,000 feet. Will post more later.
Two's company - F-35Bs of VMFAT-501
Very nice Scott, you are right about the tail markings, they are very similar to the Aussie paint scheme. Looks like fun to me.
Thanks Harvey! Here's one that's a little more dynamic.
Bank Shot
Awesome F-35 images Scott.... Looks like it was a great trip.
As I told you on Thursday, I love the crop/framing of your "Bank Shot" image. The photograph looks even better on my monitor. It really shows off the complex curves and angles that comprise the exterior of this bulbous aircraft. You've made it look almost handsome. When looking at your wonderful imagery of the 35, I recall the commentary by an elderly couple viewing a painting of Kramer on Seinfeld:
"He is a loathesome, offensive brute. Yet I can't look away. He transcends time and space. He sickens me." ;D ;)
Excellent work as always Scott.
Thank you Anna and Jeff! The F-35 is an odd bird. It takes on such a different character at varying angles and even different lighting conditions with its special coatings. I can't say it's my favorite aircraft aesthetically but it does hold your attention. It ranges from homely to impressive depending on the angle etc. The F-22 is a bit like that too. Not too great straight from the side.
Considering I didn't know I'd be shooting them on this trip I'm certainly happy with what I got. If not for the F-35s I would not have gotten anything from the air. All in all a worthwhile expenditure of time and funds. Lots of both.
Nice work Scott!
Thank you Jay!

Love the framing on this tight shot Scott. Besides the excellent IQ, it gives me the impression that the F-35 cockpit is the most commodious of any fighter jet to date - maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks to you both, Kaspar and Jeff. The cockpit does seem rather voluminous. Been waiting a long time to use that word!
These F-35 shots are all golden Scott, every one of them. Beautiful work!
Thank you Harvey, more than anything I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity. The pilot flying a/c15 is someone I worked with a couple of years ago trying to set up a flight. I didn't realize he was one of the pilots until he wrote an email to me later that day asking if it was me hanging out the back of the 130. Small world. He said it was nice to finally meet face to face, sort of.
Fantastic images Scott :o :o :o
What a wonderful opportunity.....
Thanks Anna! Long time no see by the way....
You're just killing it with the F-35 images Scott!
No animals were harmed during the taking of these photos! Thanks Jay!
Beautiful images Scott!
Thank you Jonathan!
Sure miss those colorful Navy paint schemes from the 1950's through the 1970's. At least VMFAT-501 has some art on the tail. Looks a bit like the Australian F-35As.
Gorgeous shot, Scott. That sky just works so well here. No need to worry about glare from any angle with clouds like that!
Thanks Joe! Like a giant softbox!
Definitely.
Do you have any idea why they reestablished the squadron as -501 instead of -451? Always been a bit of a head-scratcher for me.

Excellent crisp shot Ned. Amazing how many things deploy on the "B" when it goes into STOVL mode.
Thanks Harvey & Scott. I appreciate the feedback.
F-35B - Well after several weeks of silent running I decided to finally post something. It was a tough December. My mother passed away at 91 years and 2 days of age. Four days after my birthday, two days after hers. She was literally in my arms when she passed and it was a life changing experience. Anyway I haven't been too active except for some coffee shop photos taken with mainly old lenses and a Sony A7R II. This shot was taken last October. Thanks for the happy birthday comments last month. I didn't see them until today.
Beautiful shot, Scott. So sorry to hear about your mother's passing.
I was also at PASM recently and saw your jumbo-sized print of the two Hornets on the wall in the gift shop. Very nice work. I have a shot taken at the same moment, but scrolled past it in my editing because it was so heavily backlit. Impressive processing on your shot to say the least.
Thanks Joe on all counts. Yeah that Hornet shot was also not on my first pass list of keepers. Once I got into it in Lr I was able to extract a decent shot. Will post later. As you recall I was lucky to get anything! It all worked out in the end.😊
