For what it's worth, that's my craptastic Canon 75-300 lens and it absolutely HATES white airplanes.  I'd say that lens is at least 75% of the problem.

I've also been checking your EXIF data on Flickr and it looks like you're out at 300mm on most of them.  Pretty much any zoom lens is going to drop off in image quality as you approach max focal length.  Even with my Sigma, if I need to get up close to something far away, I'll extend it out to 500mm and then dial it back just a little bit.

I notice the image looks MUCH better on Flickr than it does linked here.

Someghing wonky in how Flickr links image perhaps?  How much of a crop is this Dave?

Ok so the crop isn't extreme.

How large an imge do you upload to Flickr?  I'm wondering if it's a down-sample issue maybe?

Maybe try a 1:1 test?  Resize to 800x or 1024x before uploading and link to the full size here and see if it looks better.
