A San Francisco-area pilot escaped serious injury when her biplane crashed and cartwheeled in the remote high desert southwest of Burns.

Pilot Jacquie Warda, 58, used her radio to communicate with the pilot of another aircraft after the 10:45 a.m. Sunday crash, according to the Harney County Sheriff's Office in Burns. The other pilot notified an air traffic controller in Seattle, who called the sheriff's office, which directed an air ambulance to the site about 1 p.m.

The ambulance crew found Warda on her feet beside the demolished aerobatic Pitts Special, said Jennifer Foster, a sheriff's dispatcher.

"They said it was not recognizable as an airplane," she said today.

Warda apparently was on a cross-country flight, but it wasn't immediately known where she was bound when her aircraft had engine failure, Foster said. The crash scene was in the Smokey Hollow area, east of Wagontire, she said.
